Lace up your walking shoes and prepare to explore, with your small, naturalist-led group, the natural splendor of the Big Island. Grab your camera, board your van and set off on a full-day adventure that includes lunch. Take in lush scenery on the way to Akaka Falls State Park, nestled along the northeastern Hilo coast. Here, follow a nature trail and climb some stairs to famous Akaka Falls, a dramatic 442-foot plunge over volcanic cliffs. Next, you'll set off to see the lovely 80-foot-high Rainbow Falls, named for the sunlight's effect on the spray. Pause for lunch, then it's on to Volcanoes National Park, where a certified park guide escorts you to the Kilauea Visitor Center. Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site, see the steam vents, ancient Thurston Lava Tube and otherworldly landscapes from the Halemaumau crater overlook. Conclude with a quick shopping trip along Banyan Drive before returning to port.
Special Notes:
Participants must be able to negotiate stairs to view Akaka Falls. While this is not a hiking tour, please be aware that the longest nature walk is about 1⁄2 mile each way, and includes the walk through the lava tube. Guests with heart problems are not allowed to participate. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes. Children 7 years and under require a car seat, per Hawaii state law; the tour operator can supply a child safety or booster seat at no charge with advance notice to the Shore Excursions office on board.Details
