Learn how volcanoes like Kilauea can both destroy and create, a phenomenon spectacularly on display in the lower east rift zone that experienced the 2014 and 2018 eruptions firsthand. See the island's newest black sand beach and learn the story behind its creation. Along the way, stop at one of Puna's most iconic landmarks, the Painted Church. Finish your tour with a shopping stop in Hilo to sample and purchas local goods before returning to the pier. Special Notes:
Minimum age is 5 years. Dress comfortably for warm weather and bring light jacket or sweater. Sunscreen and sunglasses recommended. Wear comfortable, sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Not recommended for guests with limited mobility. Tour requires walking unaided up to 200 yards over uneven terrain. Participants must negotiate stairs and uneven surfaces. In the case of closures due to maintenance or volcanic activity, alternative sites may be substituted. Tour operation and sequence is Civil Defense or USGS permitting.
