Journey to a frozen world of jagged ice formations, deep blue crevasses and dramatic sinkholes on this full-day, strenuous adventure into the other-worldly landscapes of Iceland's glaciers. Please wear warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and waterproof hiking shoes. Set off on a two-hour motorcoach ride that heads along the south coast through quaint villages and up along magnificent mountains and volcanoes en route to your icy destination. Along the way, stop to photograph spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Your glacier hike begins at Sólheimajökull, the frozen glacial tongue. Walk on the glacier as your guide imparts the history and observations of its breathtaking surroundings. It is an other-wordly scene, rugged, raw and an ever changing hub of ancient frozen water. On your return to Reykjavík, stop at Skógafoss waterfall for a late lunch before heading back to the city.
Special Notes:
It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer jackets and pants should be waterproof and windproof (jeans or cotton clothing are not permitted). Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Excellent, sturdy hiking shoes are required to fit the crampons. This outdoor activity comes with inherent risks. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. The walking takes place on Sólheimajökull Glacier which is a branch of the Myrdalsjökull Glacier. Lunch is light and includes Icelandic meat soup or soup of the day, bread and dessert with tea or coffeeTour operator also recommends bringing extra refreshments. This is a long walking/hiking tour, suitable only for physically fit participants. The glacier walk does not require any special skills but you must follow the guide's instruction at all times and keep to the walking paths. Waterproof pants can be rented on site at an extra cost.Minimum age to participate is 10 years old.
