The fascinating volcanic history of Santorini is explored in this hiking and sailing adventure, featuring the island's dramatic natural landmarks. Cruise the Santorini bay to Nea Kameni and hike to the summit for breathtaking, panoramic views. Nea Kameni ("Young Burnt Island") is the area's youngest volcanic island, forming only 425 years ago. Your climb to the top is approximately 40 minutes and you will begin to smell a strong sulfur odor and feel the temperature rise as you near the summit. At the top, view the black lava blocks, domes of magma that literally froze in mid-air. Return to your tour boat and cruise the shores of Nea Kameni, where you will find several hot springs. Minerals in the water dramatically alter its color. The waters are quite shallow, but your boat will stop as close to the springs as possible for a photo opportunity. Weather permitting, anyone who wishes to go swimming can jump in and feel the water gradually changing temperature as you get closer to the shore.
Special Notes:
The tour will only operate weather permitting. If the boat cannot tie up at the ship, you may depart and/or return from the port. The walk to the volcano crater is approximately 40 minutes over uneven ground, loose volcanic rocks and an incline. It is recommended walking shoes or hiking boots be worn. Also, take a hat, sunscreen and water; there is limited shade on the volcano. For swimming, passengers must use a ladder to enter and exit the water. Swimwear may change color due to the sulfur water; wear swimsuit and bring a towel.
The smell of sulfur and heat can be strong while on the volcano. Passengers with breathing problems should take it into consideration before booking the tour.
